The Photo Game: City Livin!!

Background

I joined Kenneth Wajda and a small group of photographers in a weekly photo game a while ago. Kenneth wrote a prompt each week and tasked us with creating a photograph that met the prompt. Unfortunately, Kenneth's photo game is taking a break.

Since I'm not prepared to give up the game, my wife has graciously agreed to provide me with a surprise prompt each week so that I can continue.

The rules are still the same:

  • All submissions must be scans of film, no photos from digital cameras
  • Images must be taken, processed, and submitted by 8 AM each Saturday
  • Miss a week, and you're out

My goal in playing is simple. Get out and shoot film.

This Week

This week's prompt, "City Livin!!" contrasts "Farm Life" from last week. At least, it seems like the two prompts should generate contrasting images.

Last week, I submitted photos of landscapes and animals with no people in sight. This week, I expected to photograph scenes of people interacting. I expected to capture vibrant images of humanity, showing people living together. Instead, I created more images of lonely-looking places, mostly without people.

The image below shows a secluded courtyard off of Larimer Square in Denver. It's a quiet place that feels special and secret, like a hidden oasis. This kind of place attracts me.

I made this photo on Ilford HP5+ with a Canonet QL17.
